Almost 800 Sandwiches Later . . .

Made, Donated and Delivered:
800 Sandwich Suppers for the Homeless

In December, the entire Ridgewood freshman class and 40 mentors rolled up their sleeves, made sandwiches for the homeless and spread some joy.

Mr G's HouseAdditionally, some students and mentors journeyed with the Salvation Army to downtown and the south side of Chicago to deliver the suppers to homeless men and women.

Freshmen and their mentors problem solved and worked as a team to put together sack suppers.  Each of the five Rebel Houses made upwards of 150 sandwiches that were donated to the Salvation Army Harbor Lights.  The Harbor Lights Branch is located in downtown Chicago and distributes to the homeless 365 days a year, with set delivery locations where those in need congregate daily.

Later in the week, 21 students along with mentors Major Steve Yoder from the Norridge Salvation Army, RHS alum Anthony Kaldis and RHS staffer Carol Valentino-Barry travelled to the Harbor Lights Salvation Army.  Some helped out and sorted toys in the community center while others hit the streets and served sandwich suppers.  Making their way down to 51st and Cottage Grove, students gave to individuals in extreme need and received smiles, deep gratitude and an appreciation of the rewards of serving others.

Studies show that service work helps students believe in their own abilities to serve, lead and make a difference in this world.  Making the sandwiches built connections to others and encouraged good citizenship. Ridgewood congratulates the Class of 2015 on a great mission accomplished!
